Precision. Safety. Scarless Kidney Stone Removal.
Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery (RIRS) is a modern, minimally invasive procedure used to treat kidney stones and other conditions within the kidney. The procedure is performed using a flexible fiber-optic endoscope that allows the surgeon to reach the kidney through the body’s natural urinary passage — the urethra, bladder, and ureter — without any external cuts.
During RIRS, the endoscope is gently advanced retrograde (upwards) through the urinary tract to reach the urine-collecting system of the kidney. Once the stone is located, it can be fragmented using a Holmium laser, crushed with an ultrasound probe, or retrieved using tiny stone baskets or forceps. The entire process is performed under direct vision for maximum precision and safety.
The entire procedure is performed by an expert Endourologist trained in RIRS techniques. After stone clearance, a temporary DJ stent may be placed to allow smooth urine flow and facilitate healing, which is removed after a few days.
At Dr. Sathe’s Uro-Stone Urology Clinic, Dr. Saket Sathe routinely performs RIRS using state-of-the-art flexible ureteroscopes and Holmium laser technology. This ensures precise stone removal with minimal discomfort and the fastest possible return to normal activity.
RIRS is now considered the gold standard treatment for small to medium-sized kidney stones, offering unmatched precision and safety without any surgical incision.
